Corporeal Constructions

Chicago Filmmakers

1998

Curator: Robert Wyrod

This diverse program of short films and videos highlights how the moving image has been used to construct our conceptions of the human body. The screening included rare archival films from the first half of the twentieth century, films and videos by contemporary artists, as well as novel examples of modern medical imaging. By juxtaposing provocative works from these three genres, the program explores how films and videos are part of an active struggle to define the contested notion of the human body.

Testimonio

New Museum of Contemporary Art

1993

Co-curator: Robert Wyrod as part the Testimonio collective

Testimonio was an installation examining Latino culture in New York City. It was organized collaboratively by the New Museum, the Center for Cultural Studies at CUNY Graduate School, and residents, artists, and community based organizations in East Harlem, Washington Heights, and Williamsburg. The exhibit highlighted the importance of memory as a reservoir of history, and the crucial role of storytelling as a means of building community.
